Fixed gear bicycles gain popularity among youngsters

Fixed gear bicycles, or in short fixies, are bikes without a free wheel and only with a single speed.(However most comes with choice of switching to free wheel or fixed on the back wheel)

When on fixed, these trendy looking bikes don't allow for coasting as the bike only moves when one pedals. A fixie riders enjoy many benefits when riding one. The fixies are always a head-turner when on the road due to its simple and colorful combination. The rider has the ability to control his speed as organically as possible instead of just coasting and then using a hand brake. Fixies are also less complicated and weigh less than normal coasting bikes because they don't have the same intricate derailleurs and gears as other bikes. Fixies are also growing popular because of the many tricks that can be performed on them. Just like the days of the old BMX, the rider can basically do any cool tricks on a fixie. Most famous of all is the skid to a stop trick where one has to stop the fixie while looking cool on it. Though brakes can be also installed on a fixie, most riders will not use them as it is there just for safety precaution. Some may think that not having a brake is dangerous for the rider, but in contrary most fixie riders are actually more alert when they ride, especially when riding without brakes. They are definitely more focused and are more aware of their surroundings.

Fixies are not as popular as regular geared bikes and many bike shops do not stock them. Therefore many riders prefer to buy their fixed gear bikes and accessories online.

The first time most people ride a fixie, they are surprised by the constant movement of the pedals and the inability to stop. Some will also be surprised by the fact that the rider couldn't stop pedaling! Riding up slope and down slope suddenly becomes more difficult.
